"Bottlescape"

This work which to this day hangs in the dining room at Chartwell was Painted in 1915.  Family would sometimes be called upon to help compose a "paintatious" group. Churchill's daughter, Mary Soames describes the detail of "bottlescape" - "an array of assorted bottles, from a gargantuan bottle of brandy to an imperial pint of champagne  flanked with cigar boxes, lit by a lamp".

Churchill: The Painter

Churchill's talent was multi-facetted, he was a soldier, politician, wartime leader, writer and historian. In 1915, at the age of 41 Churchill discovered a natural talent as an artist and for the rest of his life he painted enthusiastically. His art embraced many subjects and locations in Britain and around the world. Churchill painted over 500 canvases predominantly of landscapes, but also still lifes and self portraits.
