Mimizan: Churchill enjoyed many holidays on the Duke of Westminster’s Estate at Mimizan in France.  It was set in Les Landes, a large area south of Bordeaux protected by colossal sand dunes; the original marshy wasteland was later planted with commercial pinewoods.

Churchill was much attracted by the trees and their shadows as well as their Lakeland setting.  The artist Sir John Lavery was a fellow guest on atleast one occasion and his general influence on Churchill’s technique can be seen in this long series of paintings.  Mimizan also gave Churchill the opportunity to enjoy a favourite sport – boar hunting.
