"The Gardener's Cottage"

Churchill and his wife Clementine frequently stayed at this house, "Lou Sueil" overlooking St Jean Cap Ferrat to the west of Monaco.  This property was owned by Churchill's cousin Consuelo Vanderbilt and her second husband Jacques Balsan.  Churchill gave this painting to Madeleine Whyte who was Clementine's cousin and a bridesmaid at their wedding in 1908.

Churchill: The Painter

Churchill's talent was multi-facetted, he was a soldier, politician, wartime leader, writer and historian. In 1915, at the age of 41 Churchill discovered a natural talent as an artist and for the rest of his life he painted enthusiastically. His art embraced many subjects and locations in Britain and around the world. Churchill painted over 500 canvases predominantly of landscapes, but also still lifes and self portraits.
