The 1906 General Election was the first in which Churchill fought as a Liberal. He campaigned for Manchester North-West on a single issue: Free Trade, something that was close to the hearts of his Manchester cotton manufacturing constituents. Although this constituency had long been Tory, Free Trade had opened an opportunity for the Liberals who, unlike the Conservatives, were firmly committed to it. Churchill, who had been brought up in Lord Randolph's house as a opponent of tariffs in general was swept into office in what was the last great Liberal landslide. This melodramatic painting of a desperately disadvantaged family in their humble flat with "FREE TRADE" printed across bottom of the image was no doubt used by the Tory party to suggest the economic devastation to come as a result of Free Trade. The card is in very good condition, verso unmarked.
