Churchill originally gave this painting to his sister-in-law Nellie Hozier, who remained in France during the war and whose house was occcupied by the Germans. Churchill: The Painter Churchill's talent was multi-facetted, he was a soldier, politician, wartime leader, writer and historian. In 1915, at the age of 41 Churchill discovered a natural talent as an artist and for the rest of his life he painted enthusiastically. His art embraced many subjects and locations in Britain and around the world. Churchill painted over 500 canvases predominantly of landscapes, but also still lifes and self portraits.
